A sawmill and a lumber flume are under the water.
Shaver Lake is a 2,177-acre reservoir in the Sierra National Forest, 55 miles east of Fresno at 5,500 feet — Southern California Edison completed Shaver Dam here in 1927, flooding an 1890s sawmill and log-pond dam built by pioneers Lewis Swift and Charles Shaver.
Shaver Lake sits in the Sierra National Forest at 5,500 feet elevation, 55 miles east of Fresno on Highway 168. The lake takes its name from Charles Shaver, who along with Lewis Swift built a sawmill and log-pond dam here in the 1890s, floating lumber 45 miles by flume to Clovis. Southern California Edison bought the site in 1917 and completed the current Shaver Dam in 1927 for the Big Creek hydroelectric project, flooding the old mill beneath the reservoir that carries Shaver's name. The town is genuinely small — Sierra Marina and Shaver Lake Marina at Camp Edison cover the seasonal boat rentals, Trading Post Dinner House and Mountain Tripper Cafe & Tea House cover the dining and coffee, and Ken's Market, family-owned since 1943, covers the grocery run. There's no hospital in town; Clovis Urgent Care Medical Center, about 40 miles down the mountain, is the closest real medical option.
