Rangeley Lake

Fly-fishing water since the 1800s. No road circles the lake.

Rangeley Lake sits nine miles long in the Western Maine mountains, a fishing-and-fly-fishing market that was drawing anglers a century before anyone called it a vacation destination. Saddleback Mountain rises fifteen minutes away, and the village at the north end still runs on the same rhythm — busy through fishing season and ski season, quiet in between.

About Rangeley Lake

Rangeley Lake occupies Franklin County in Maine's Western Mountains, a nine-mile lake whose reputation was built by brook trout and landlocked salmon, not real estate marketing — the sporting-camp trade here dates to the 1800s, and Registered Maine Guides still book solid through the best fall fishing weeks. The village of Rangeley sits on the lake's north shore, small enough that Main Street covers the whole commercial district. Oquossoc, eight miles west, is the second hub, closer to Mooselookmeguntic Lake and Bald Mountain's fire-tower trail. There's no road that circles Rangeley Lake — Route 4 connects the two villages along the north shore, while the south and east shores stay roadless, just camp driveways off spur roads. What the region lacks in commercial density it makes up in the outdoors: Rangeley Lake State Park's beach faces Saddleback Mountain directly, Height of Land on Route 17 delivers one of New England's better roadside views of Mooselookmeguntic and the peaks beyond, and Smalls Falls and Angel Falls give hikers real waterfalls within a half-hour of the village. Winter turns the region into working snowmobile country — 150-plus miles of local trail — while Saddleback Mountain adds downhill skiing fifteen minutes from town. The tradeoff for that authenticity is real remoteness: the nearest 24-hour ER is 45 minutes south in Farmington, and several businesses close outright between Columbus Day and ski season.
