Lake Placid — the lake, not the village sharing its name — sits just west of Main Street's Mirror Lake loop: four miles long, a mile and a half wide, glacially carved to 151 feet at its deepest, with three islands (Buck, Moose, Hawk) breaking up water that stays cold into June. Most of the 20-mile shoreline is private — generational camps, the Whiteface Club & Resort's 1882 boathouse on the west shore, and Lake Placid Marina as the closest thing to a public dock. Whiteface Mountain, eleven miles north in Wilmington, holds the horizon from every north-facing window. The character here is outdoors first — the Adirondak Loj and South Meadow trailheads put you inside the High Peaks Wilderness before 8 AM if you're smart about parking. Paddle the lake's length to Whiteface Landing and you've combined the two things this place is for — boating and hiking — into one morning. It's quieter than the village core by design: no Main Street foot traffic, no oval crowd, just the camps and the water. Come for the walk-to-dinner village, stay on Mirror Lake. Come for the water, the mountain view, and the trailheads — this is the lake.
