Gull Lake

Kalamazoo's lake, Kellogg's old estate.

W.K. Kellogg's own cereal fortune built the mansion on the hill above this lake, and gave Michigan State the research station now circling it. Twenty minutes south, Bell's still pours Two Hearted off the same counter that made it famous — the kind of small-lake, big-neighbor arrangement most of Michigan's other inland lakes don't have.

About Gull Lake

Gull Lake sits in the gap between Kalamazoo and Barry counties, its shoreline split among Richland, Hickory Corners, and Delton — three towns small enough that Harding's Friendly Markets in Richland still counts as the area's real grocery store. The lake's defining fact is cereal money: W.K. Kellogg built his own estate on the highest point above the water in 1925, a fifteen-thousand-square-foot house he reportedly called his cottage, complete with an imported Dutch windmill on his own island. He gave the land to Michigan State University, which now runs both the Manor House as a self-guided tour and the adjoining Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, founded in 1927 as a Canada goose refuge and later a working part of Michigan's trumpeter swan restoration. Five minutes north in Hickory Corners, the Gilmore Car Museum has grown into North America's largest auto museum by its own count — ninety acres, more than four hundred vehicles, easy to lose an afternoon in without planning to. The lake itself has one public swimming beach, Ross Township Park, run by volunteers on a gate fee rather than tax dollars, and one public boat launch, staffed and metered, in Prairieville Township. What the lake lacks in public shoreline it makes up in an unusual specific: a shore dive off Ross Township Park's own beach drops divers past a sunken car, a motorcycle, and a stretch of railroad track, deliberately placed and rated for advanced training. Twenty minutes south, Kalamazoo does the heavy lifting for dinner and nightlife — Bell's Eccentric Cafe still pours Two Hearted at the same walk-up counter that built the brand, with Arcadia Ales a few minutes further down Michigan Avenue. Galesburg's Gull Lake Distilling Company splits the difference for anyone who doesn't want the full Kalamazoo drive. This isn't a lake built for a resort-town week; it's a research station, a car museum, and a brewery city that happen to share a zip code with good water.
