Maryland's largest lake, wrapped around a real ski town.
Maryland's largest lake sits inside a real ski town — Wisp Resort runs chairlifts in July for mountain bikers and in January for skiers, and the water in between draws more marinas per mile than anywhere else in this registry.
Deep Creek Lake is a 3,900-acre reservoir the state of Maryland built in 1925, and it still runs on that dual identity: a man-made lake wrapped around a genuine four-season resort. McHenry, at the north end near Wisp Resort, is the commercial center — Deep Creek Drive's cluster of marinas, Garrett Highway's restaurants and breweries. Thayerville, mid-lake at its widest point, holds the lakefront dinner houses, where the deck matters as much as the menu. Oakland, the county seat fifteen minutes inland, is where the infrastructure lives — the hospital, the hardware store that's operated since 1884, competing drive-thru pharmacies. Wisp Resort is the anchor that makes this lake different from anywhere else in the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic: Maryland's only ski mountain in winter, a mountain coaster and lift-served biking in summer, night skiing lit most of the week from December to March. Fifteen minutes west, Swallow Falls State Park holds Muddy Creek Falls, the state's tallest waterfall, framed by old-growth hemlock. This is boating country in the literal sense — six-plus rental operations on Deep Creek Drive alone, a 24-hour state park launch, and personal-watercraft blackout hours written into state rule because the traffic actually requires them. Close enough to Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and D.C. to be a real weekend market for all three, Deep Creek runs on two very different calendars — ski season and boat season — and rarely goes quiet in between.
