Where to take the kids.

The places that don't make you apologize for the kids. Restaurants with crayons that aren't an afterthought, parks with shade and bathrooms, the ice-cream stop with the line on a hot Tuesday.

Restaurants

7 stops
  • McHenry
    Archie's BBQ

Pig-themed barbecue joint on the McHenry side doing brisket and pulled pork low and slow, baked beans and cornbread on the side. Casual enough for a wet swimsuit and sandy feet. Portions run generous — split a plate between two before ordering a second.

  • McHenry
    Deep Creek Pizza

Straightforward Garrett Highway pizza counter, the fallback when the group wants dinner without a wait. Nothing fancy on the menu and nothing wrong with that after a full day on the water. Delivery covers most of the McHenry rental cluster.

  • McHenry
    Ledo Pizza

The square-cut, cold-cut-pepperoni-on-top pizza that's been a Maryland original since 1955, franchised out to a Garrett Highway storefront. Different enough from a round pie that first-timers should know what they're ordering. Good for a family that already has a Ledo's back home and wants the familiar order on vacation.

  • Oakland
    Brenda's Pizzeria

Huge pies with toppings piled past the edge of restraint, a regular mention on every local best-pizza list. The crust holds up to the weight without going soggy, which is the actual test. Order a size up from what the table thinks it needs.

  • Oakland
    Third Street Diner

Classic community diner on Third Street — the open-faced roast beef sandwich is the order longtime regulars don't bother reading past. Homemade cakes sit in the case by the register. Breakfast through dinner, which makes it the fallback when the rest of the group can't agree on a plan.

  • Oakland
    Little Sandy's

A former gas station turned diner, and the building's second act is the better one — fluffy pancakes, enormous omelets, homemade pies and cinnamon rolls. Portions run large enough to split. The kind of place a family keeps returning to across a decade of summers without ever quite planning it.

  • Oakland
    Englander's

Soda-fountain grill tucked behind an antique shop in Oakland — easy to drive past if you don't know to look. Milkshakes are the reason to find it, alongside eggs, pancakes, and omelets that don't try to be more than a diner breakfast. Cash moves faster than a card here.

Coffee & breakfast

  • McHenry
    Bear Creek Coffee & Creamery
    Editor's pick

Coffee and hand-dipped Hershey's ice cream under one roof, which settles the argument about whether to stop for caffeine or dessert. Breakfast sandwiches and baked goods round out the menu, making it a legitimate morning stop and not just an afternoon one. Indoor and outdoor seating both fill on a hot Saturday.

Parks & trails

  • Swanton
    Deep Creek Lake State Park
    Editor's pick

The lake's central public anchor — a mile of shoreline, two lifeguarded swim beaches, 20 miles of hiking and biking trails, and a 112-site campground open mid-April through mid-December. The 6,000-square-foot Discovery Center covers black bears, the lake's watershed, and the region's logging history for a rainy afternoon. A nominal day-use fee applies year-round.

  • Swallow Falls
    Swallow Falls State Park
    Editor's pick

Home to Muddy Creek Falls, Maryland's tallest waterfall, plus several smaller cascades and a stand of old-growth hemlock that predates the state park system itself. The 1.4-mile loop trail hits every waterfall and works for a family with young kids. A 5.5-mile trail connects here from Herrington Manor for anyone doing both parks as one hike.

  • Oakland
    Herrington Manor State Park
    Editor's pick

A 365-acre park built around its own 53-acre spring-fed lake — swimming, canoeing, and twenty furnished log cabins that rent year-round, Saturday-to-Saturday in peak summer. Twelve miles of hiking trails ring the property, including the loop that runs 5.5 miles one-way to Swallow Falls. Quieter than Deep Creek itself, and the smaller lake warms up faster in June.

Farmers markets

  • McHenry
    Deep Creek Farmers Market
    Editor's pick

Friday-afternoon market in the Garrett College parking lot, late May through early October — produce, artisan goods, and prepared food from a rotating list of Garrett County growers. Three to six, later than most lake-town markets, which works for anyone who's spent the day on the water. Smaller than Oakland's market but closer to most rentals.

  • McHenry
    Wisp Resort
    Editor's pick

Maryland's only ski resort, 33 slopes and 11 miles of trails lit for night skiing most of the season, roughly early December through late March. The same mountain runs a mountain coaster, scenic chairlift, mini golf, archery, and disc golf all summer, plus lift-served mountain biking. A High-5 Pass bundles five summer activities into one ticket rather than pricing each ride separately.

Winter: early Dec–late Mar. Summer activities seasonal — check current hours.Visit ↗
  • Swallow Falls
    Muddy Creek Falls
    Editor's pick

Maryland's tallest waterfall at 53 feet, inside Swallow Falls State Park and reachable via the easy 1.4-mile loop trail. Runs hardest during spring snowmelt and often freezes into a solid sheet by January, which draws its own crowd of ice climbers and photographers. The old-growth hemlock along the approach is nearly as much the point as the falls themselves.

  • Swanton
    Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center
    Editor's pick

A 6,000-square-foot nature center inside Deep Creek Lake State Park covering black bears, the lake's watershed, and the coal-and-logging history that shaped the region before it was a resort. Daily programs run through the season. The rainy-day answer when the beach plan falls through and the group still wants to be at the park.
