A TVA reservoir that helped power the Manhattan Project.
Watts Bar Lake is a TVA reservoir on the Tennessee River between Knoxville and Chattanooga, completed in January 1942 to power the war effort and the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge — 39,000-plus surface acres, eight marinas, and towns like Kingston, Spring City, and Ten Mile spread along the shoreline.
Watts Bar Lake stretches 72 miles along the Tennessee River in East Tennessee, one of nine TVA dams on the river, completed in January 1942 three weeks after Pearl Harbor to help power the war effort and the Manhattan Project at nearby Oak Ridge. Eight marinas ring the shoreline across Ten Mile, Spring City, and Kingston — Blue Springs Marina's Crow's Nest is the lake's best-known waterfront restaurant, while Kingston's Caramella Bistro is the fine-dining outlier a few minutes off the water. Kingston, the Roane County seat, covers the grocery run; Harriman covers the hospital.
