Walloon Lake

Hemingway's summer lake.

Ernest Hemingway spent his first twenty-one summers on this shore, rowing across from Windemere to Horton Bay for a meal he'd still be writing about decades later. The water is clear enough to watch the bottom drop away past Barrel Back's dock, ten feet down and still visible.

About Walloon Lake

Walloon Lake sits between Charlevoix and Emmet Counties, three glacial arms meeting at Walloon Lake Village, small enough to walk end to end in ten minutes. Ernest Hemingway's family built Windemere on the north shore in 1900, and he spent every summer here from age one to twenty-one, rowing across to Horton Bay, four miles by the old walking route, for the general store that shows up in "Up in Michigan" and "The Last Good Country." Windemere is still privately owned by his family and closed to visitors; the pilgrimage here is a drive along the shore and a look across the water, not a ticketed tour. Horton Bay General Store, in a village that's barely more than a crossroads, is the site you can actually walk into. The lake's other reputation is water clarity: sand visible ten feet down off a dock, cold enough in June to notice and warm enough by August to stay in past dark. Barrel Back handles the dock-and-dine side of that, with private slips at Legacy Water Sports directly beneath a cantilevered deck, glass garage doors thrown open on a clear night, twenty-three taps and a wood-fired oven running through the season. Hotel Walloon, AAA Four Diamond, faces the village park a few doors down. Eight minutes north on US-131, Petoskey carries the actual town infrastructure, the hospital, the grocery store, Beards Brewery and Walloon Lake Winery both working the corridor between the two towns, plus its own Hemingway footnote at City Park Grill, where the back room still carries his name. Boyne City, fifteen minutes south, runs quieter: a farmers market, a Family Fare with a pharmacy counter, an easier version of the same lake week. Late June through Labor Day is peak; the wineries and farm stands start closing by mid-October, and the docks come out not long after.
