The list nobody Instagrams. Where to grocery-shop on a Saturday afternoon. Which gas station's open at 11. Where the pharmacy is at six on a Sunday. The closest urgent care if the kid hits the dock the wrong way.
We list the boring stuff so the vacation works.
Tops Friendly Markets sits at 40 Fennell Street, three minutes from Clift Park — a full supermarket inside the village, not just wine and cottage basics. Produce, a meat counter, a real pharmacy line, open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day. Stock up here on arrival instead of routing through Auburn first. Lot fills by ten on July Saturdays same as everywhere else in town.
Discount grocery in the Auburn Plaza on Grant Avenue, twenty minutes north on Route 20 — produce, dairy, and the rotating weekly aisle of tools and outdoor gear regulars actually shop for. Cash-and-carry pricing beats the village by a wide margin on a week's worth of basics. Open seven days, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pair the run with Tops in Auburn if the list is long.
The nearest full Wegmans — Township Boulevard in Camillus, about twenty-five minutes east through Marcellus. Prepared-food case, a wine and cheese section deeper than anything in the village, and a pharmacy open later than Skaneateles CVS. Worth the drive once a stay for a real restock. Go before six to skip the after-work rush from Syracuse commuters heading the same direction.
Wine and liquor store on West Genesee, a block off Clift Park — a real selection of New York labels next to the usual national names, plus local snacks and gift bottles for the last night of a rental week. Staff will steer you to whatever Finger Lakes producer isn't sitting in the grocery store cooler. Open until 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, shorter Sunday hours.
Ace Hardware spread across three floors on Fennell Street — hardware and plumbing in the basement, paint and housewares on the main level, patio furniture and a seasonal Christmas shop upstairs. Propane tank exchange out front, fishing tackle by the register. The forgot-to-pack fix for anything from a boat fender to a phone charger. Open seven days; weekdays close latest, at 7 p.m.
Propane delivery and tank service out of an East Genesee Street office — the call for a rental with a propane grill, fire pit, or backup generator running low mid-week. Weekday office hours only, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., no weekend walk-ins. This is a delivery operation, not a retail counter — call ahead. Skaneateles Town Square exchanges tanks on the spot if it's urgent.
Bait and tackle shop on Crow Hill Road, running since 1996 — minnows, worms, and the lures the lake's trout and smallmouth actually take, sold by people who fish the water themselves. No website, no online ordering; call ahead if you need something specific before a dawn charter. The real answer when the marina gift shop only stocks souvenir bobbers.
True Value hardware in Marcellus, about fifteen minutes from the west shore — the fallback when Skaneateles Town Square doesn't have the part or the line's too long on a Saturday. Marcellus lost its only grocery store, Nojaim Brothers, in 2024 — Nightingale and the Stewart's that replaced it are now the town's remaining errand stops. Check hours before a special trip; it runs on a small-town schedule.
Gas and deli counter on Jordan Street, a two-minute walk from Doug's Fish Fry — the village's original Byrne Dairy, still pumping regular and premium at village prices. Full deli, Byrne Dairy soft-serve, and a coffee station open 5 a.m. to midnight. The easy fill-up before a west-shore drive, where the next station is fifteen miles off.
Second village Byrne Dairy, out East Genesee toward Marcellus — ethanol-free and 93-octane premium at the pumps, which the boat crowd asks for by name. Same deli and ice-cream case as the Jordan Street location, same 5 a.m. to midnight hours. Better bet than the village center on a Saturday, when the Fennell Street lot backs up onto Genesee Street.
Free Tesla Destination charging in the guest lot at Mirbeau Inn & Spa on West Genesee — two Tesla connectors and one universal J1772 plug. Meant for hotel guests, though it's usually available when the lot isn't full. No fee, no account needed. The backup option when the village's public charging spots are already taken on a summer weekend.
Level 2 public charging in the municipal lot off Fennell Street, a short walk from Tops and the CVS — free, first-come, no account or app required. A couple of ports depending on the season; don't count on an open one during a festival weekend, when every space in the lot is spoken for. Mirbeau's Tesla chargers are the backup, a mile up West Genesee.
CVS Pharmacy on Fennell Street, open until 9 p.m. — the later of the village's two pharmacies, useful when a kid's ear infection or a lost prescription can't wait for morning. Drive-up window, immunizations, and the front-of-store stock for sunscreen, bug spray, and whatever the rental doesn't have enough of. Kinney Drugs a few doors down closes earlier in the evening.
Kinney Drugs on Fennell Street, the other village pharmacy — open until 8:30 p.m., full-service counter for prescriptions, immunizations, and medical equipment rental. Regional Central New York chain, so a prescription started here transfers easily to another Kinney if the trip continues past the lake. Closes earlier than CVS across the street; call ahead on a Sunday.
Cayuga County's hospital, twenty minutes north on Route 20 — twenty-four-hour emergency department and the closest real trauma care for the whole lake. Save the address before you need it; cell service on the south end of Skaneateles runs thin enough that pulling up directions from a moving car isn't a given. Auburn also carries the area's CVS and Rite Aid density if a pharmacy runs out.
Walk-in urgent care in Camillus, about thirty minutes east — X-rays, stitches, and the non-emergency version of the Auburn ER for a twisted ankle on the dock or a rash that won't wait for a regular doctor. No appointment needed, seven days a week, extended hours including holidays. The better call than the ER for anything that isn't life-threatening.
Village veterinary practice on Jordan Street — the go-to for the dog that got into the tackle box or ate something off the dock. Weekday hours split morning and afternoon, Saturday mornings only, closed Sunday. Handles routine wellness on top of same-week sick visits; call ahead rather than walking in, especially in July.
Second village vet option, out East Genesee toward the town line — full wellness and sick-visit care, open most weekdays with a shorter Wednesday. Runs a text line alongside the phone line, useful if you're standing at the dock trying to describe what the dog swallowed. Book ahead in summer; walk-ins aren't guaranteed at either practice in town.
