Six lakes, one island downtown, the world's oldest amateur ski show.
Downtown Minocqua sits on its own island between two of the six connected lakes — walk from the farmers market to the beach to a water ski show that's been running free since 1950, without moving the car once.
The Minocqua Chain links six lakes across roughly 5,800 acres in Wisconsin's Northwoods, with downtown Minocqua itself built on an island between Lake Minocqua and Lake Kawaguesaga. It's a genuinely walkable core for a lake this far north — Torpy Park's beach, the Friday farmers market, and most of the restaurants all sit within a few blocks. Woodruff, just across the bridge, holds Howard Young Medical Center, the area's hospital. The Min-Aqua Bats, the world's oldest continually running amateur water ski show, has performed free on Lake Minocqua since 1950. The Bearskin State Trail runs 21.5 miles south to Tomahawk on an old logging railroad bed. This reads as a family lake first — the zoo, the ski show, the beach — rather than the quiet-couples retreat some of the state's other lakes lean into.
