Lake Willoughby

A glacial fjord between two cliffs.

A 300-foot glacial trench between two cliff faces, with a beach at each end and almost nothing else. Westmore has no traffic light — this is a lake you come to for the hike and the water, not the restaurant list.

About Lake Willoughby

Lake Willoughby sits in Westmore, a Northeast Kingdom town with no traffic light and a year-round population you could seat in one restaurant. What it has instead is geography: a 1,653-acre glacial lake over 300 feet deep, pinned between the cliffs of Mount Pisgah on the east and Mount Hor on the west, close enough to feel like driving into a fjord rather than approaching a lake. Route 5A runs five shoulder-less miles down the east side, an old road that predates guardrails and drives like it. North Beach, at the top of the lake, is the family stop — sand, a gradual drop-off, Pisgah's cliffs filling the far view. South Beach, at the bottom, trades ease of access for proximity to the cliffs themselves, and carries a long-standing informal clothing-optional tradition on its far end worth knowing before a family trip. The hike is the actual point: Pisgah's South Trail climbs 1,650 feet in 4.4 miles to an overlook with nothing between you and the water below, closed seasonally each spring and summer for nesting peregrine falcons. There are exactly two places to eat in Westmore — The Gap Pub & Grill and the deli counter at Willoughby Lake Store — and that's the entire restaurant scene. Everything else, from a real grocery run to an ER, means 15 to 30 minutes to Barton or Newport. White Caps Campground rents kayaks for paddling under the cliffs at sunrise, when the water goes still. This isn't a lake with a scene, a wine list, or cell service you can count on past the state forest tree line. It's a lake for people who want the hike, the cold clear water, and a reason to put the phone away, and who understand that's the whole offer.
