How was Lake Rabun created?
Georgia Power's Mathis Dam was completed in May 1915, but the 835-acre lake wasn't filled for another decade — the company waited until it finished a tunnel carrying water to the Terrora hydroelectric plant at Tallulah Falls. It's the third of six lakes in the Tallulah River chain, after Lake Burton and Lake Seed.
What's the closest airport to Lake Rabun?
Asheville Regional (AVL) is the nearest with regular commercial service, a little over an hour's drive. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) is the larger hub, roughly two and a half hours south.

Rabun Boat House on Lake Rabun Road rents pontoons by the half or full day and leases slips. Bear Gap Outfitters covers pontoons, canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards, and also rents for neighboring Lake Seed and Lake Burton.
Is there a public beach at Lake Rabun?
Yes — Lake Rabun Beach Recreation Area, a U.S. Forest Service campground in the Chattahoochee National Forest, has a sand swim beach with a bathhouse and roped-off swimming area, plus 80 campsites.
