Scenic View Restaurant, on a hill overlooking Hoosier National Forest a few minutes north of Paynetown — upscale American fare and a wide patio, open Friday through Sunday only.

Where can I rent a boat at Lake Monroe?
Fourwinds Lakeside Inn & Marina on the southwest shore runs the largest fleet, from WaveRunners to pontoons to double-decker yachts through Paradise Rental Boats. Lake Monroe Boat Rental at Paynetown, on the east shore, is the other option.
Are there hiking trails at Lake Monroe?
Yes — 36 miles of trails across the Hoosier National Forest shoreline, including Pate Hollow, Peninsula, and Grubb Ridge. Hardin Ridge Recreation Area, on the lake's forest side, is the trailhead hub, with its own campground and swim beach.

Is Lake Monroe good for a family trip?
Yes — three public beaches (Memorial Day through Labor Day): Fairfax, next to Fourwinds with a playground, mini-golf, and tennis and basketball courts; Paynetown; and Hardin Ridge's own swim beach and playground. Nine boat launches and multiple campgrounds make it an easy day trip or weekend from Bloomington.

When to come

When's the best time to visit Lake Monroe?
Late spring through Labor Day for the full boating season and the beaches. Windjammer Grill closes for the season after September, and most of the recreation areas scale back noticeably once the campgrounds wind down.
