Where Dirty Dancing's lift scene was actually filmed.
Lake Lure is a 720-acre lake in the Blue Ridge foothills, dammed in 1926 by Dr. Lucius B. Morse — the genuine filming location for several Dirty Dancing scenes, including the lift in the water itself, with Chimney Rock village at its edge.
Lake Lure sits in the Blue Ridge foothills, a 720-acre lake created in 1926 when Dr. Lucius B. Morse dammed the Rocky Broad River, named by his wife Elizabeth Parkerson. The 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa fronts the lake's only public beach; Chimney Rock village, right at the water's edge, holds Old Rock Cafe and the entrance to Chimney Rock State Park. Dirty Dancing filmed several of its key scenes here in 1987 — the lift happened in this lake, not the Virginia lake that provided the film's lodge exteriors. Rutherfordton, the Rutherford County seat, covers the hospital.
