962 miles of shoreline — more than any other lake in this guide.
Lake Hartwell is a 56,000-acre Army Corps of Engineers reservoir straddling the Georgia-South Carolina border, built between 1955 and 1962 on the Savannah, Tugaloo, and Seneca rivers — 962 miles of shoreline, the most of any lake covered here.
Lake Hartwell sits on the Georgia-South Carolina border below Clemson, 56,000 acres of water created when the Army Corps of Engineers dammed the Savannah, Tugaloo, and Seneca rivers between 1955 and 1962 for flood control, hydropower, and navigation. Its 962 miles of shoreline spread the lake's commercial base across two states and several towns rather than one center: Portman Marina and Big Water Marina anchor the South Carolina south end near Anderson, Clemson Marina covers the northwest corner near Seneca, and Hartwell Marina works the Georgia shore near downtown Hartwell — each with its own on-the-water restaurant. Sadlers Creek State Park on the South Carolina side and Tugaloo State Park on the Georgia side add public beach and boat-ramp access. Anderson, the larger of the two anchor towns, covers the grocery run and the hospital.
