Lake Charlevoix· Insider Q&A

Answers, not algorithms.

The questions travelers actually Google before they arrive — and the answers you'd get from a friend who lives on Lake Charlevoix.

Getting there & around

Logistics

What's the closest airport to Lake Charlevoix?
Pellston Regional Airport (PLN), about 25 minutes north, runs limited seasonal commercial service. Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) in Traverse City, closer to 50 minutes south, carries the fuller year-round schedule and is where most visitors actually fly in. Rent a car at either — neither sits close enough to the lake to skip one.
How does the Ironton Ferry work?
A four-car cable ferry has crossed the South Arm's 610-foot narrows since 1876, cutting a thirty-minute drive around the water down to about ten. Five dollars a carload, a dollar for a bicycle, pedestrians free — cash or a punch card, no reservations. It runs 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., mid-April through mid-November only.
How far apart are Boyne City, Charlevoix, and East Jordan?
Boyne City to Charlevoix runs about 20 minutes around the lake's north shore on M-66. Boyne City to East Jordan is closer to 15 minutes on the east side, or a few minutes shortcutting across the Ironton Ferry instead of driving the South Arm's full perimeter. Charlevoix to East Jordan is the longest leg, near 30 minutes.
Is parking difficult in downtown Charlevoix in summer?
Yes, especially around Round Lake's harbor and Bridge Street on Venetian Festival weekend in late July. The municipal lots near East Park fill first; side streets off Clinton and Park Avenue are the reliable backup. Slip reservations at the marina open six months out and go fast, so boaters should plan dockage before a parking spot.
Groceries, gas, urgent care

Essentials

Where's the closest full grocery store?
Family Fare on North Lake Street covers Boyne City, open until 11 p.m. with an in-house pharmacy. Oleson's Food Store on Antrim Street is the Charlevoix-side option, open seven days with a real bakery and deli counter. East Jordan has no full supermarket — plan to provision in Boyne City or Charlevoix before heading to the South Arm.
Where's the closest urgent care or ER?
Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital runs the only 24-hour emergency department on the lake, on Lake Shore Drive. For anything less urgent, McLaren Northern Michigan's walk-in urgent care in Petoskey, about 20 minutes north, is open seven days — mornings through evening on weekdays, shorter hours on weekends.
Where can I find hardware or beer and wine near the lake?
Boyne City Hardware on Water Street covers dock hardware, propane, and the tool nobody packed. Neither Boyne City nor Charlevoix has a dedicated liquor store; Boyne Marathon's gas station stocks a real beer and wine selection, and most restaurants and breweries sell bottles to go. Michigan's state stores are a drive to Petoskey.
Where to eat

Food & drink

Where do locals eat around Lake Charlevoix?
South Arm Cafe in East Jordan for the cinnamon rolls, away from the tourist traffic through Boyne City or Charlevoix. Stiggs Brewery & Kitchen on a weeknight, before the summer crowd finds it. Muskrat Distilling's weekday five-to-six happy hour, when the gin and tonics run five dollars and nobody's put it online.
Is there dock-and-dine on Lake Charlevoix?
Yes. Cafe Sante sits right on the Boyne City marina basin with transient slips a few steps from the patio. The Pointe Fish & Grill at Sommerset Pointe puts you dockside on the southwest shore, Wednesday through Sunday only. The Weathervane in Charlevoix faces the Pine River Channel instead, watching the drawbridge stop traffic for a passing mast.
Is Muskrat Distilling worth a stop?
Yes — it's the date-night default for a lot of Boyne City regulars, not just a novelty tasting room. House gin, rum, and bourbon go into cocktails that change with the season. It doesn't open until 4 p.m., and the weekday five-to-six happy hour on classics like the gin and tonic is worth building an evening around.
What's worth doing

Things to do

How do you see the Earl Young mushroom houses?
Pick up the free self-guided map at the visitor center on Mason Street and walk Clinton Street, Park Avenue, and Boulder Park — most of the twenty-six houses and four commercial buildings sit within range on foot. They're privately owned with no interior access; view from the sidewalk. Paid GEM-car tours add commentary if history matters more than photos.
What's there to do around Lake Charlevoix when it rains?
Castle Farms' self-guided tours through the 1918 stone complex and gardens run year-round regardless of weather. Muskrat Distilling and Stiggs Brewery & Kitchen both work for an afternoon indoors. Earl Young's mushroom houses are still visible from a car with the windows up, if walking in the rain isn't the plan.
Should I stay in Boyne City or Charlevoix?
Charlevoix for the resort scene — Round Lake's harbor, Bridge Street shops, the mushroom houses, a straight shot out to Lake Michigan. Boyne City for a working-town Main Street that still has a hardware store and a distillery instead of only galleries, plus a marina and beach locals actually use. East Jordan, quieter than both, anchors the South Arm.
On the water & on the trail

Outdoors

Where can you launch a boat on Lake Charlevoix?
Boyne City's F. Grant Moore Municipal Marina handles anything over twenty feet with a multi-lane concrete ramp. The Ironton DNR launch is the easiest put-in for the South Arm specifically. Round Lake Municipal Marina in Charlevoix leans toward slip dockage rather than a trailer ramp — reserve well ahead for a summer weekend at any of the three.
Where's the best view of Lake Charlevoix?
The platform at the top of Avalanche Preserve's 462 wooden steps, looking down at Boyne City, nearly the whole lake, and a sliver of Lake Michigan on a clear day. For a lower-effort version, the Weathervane's deck on the Pine River Channel catches boats passing under the drawbridge at sunset instead of a hilltop climb.
With the family

Kids

Is Lake Charlevoix good for families with kids?
Yes. Young State Park's beach and playground, Veterans Memorial Park's boardwalk and marina lawn, and Sunnyside's all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet all work for a family week. The Ironton Ferry ride alone counts as an activity for younger kids. Castle Farms' model railroad and Lavender Hill Farm's fields round out a rainy or slow afternoon.
Where can kids swim on Lake Charlevoix?
Young State Park's sand beach on the eastern shore and Veterans Memorial Park's swimming beach in downtown Boyne City are the two easiest options, both with playgrounds nearby. Whiting Park's beach, between Boyne City and Ironton, runs quieter on the same weekend. None of the public beaches post lifeguards, so plan on close supervision either way.
With the dog

Pets

How dog-friendly is Lake Charlevoix?
Reasonably. Bridge Street Tap Room seats leashed dogs on its patio, Veterans Memorial Park and Young State Park both allow dogs on leash, and Whiting Park's trails stay open to them too. Lake Street Veterinary Clinic in Boyne City covers routine care, with after-hours emergencies routed to a sister clinic in Harbor Springs.
Seasons & weather

When to come

When's the best time to visit Lake Charlevoix?
Late June through August for warm swimming water and every seasonal restaurant and marina open at once — also the busiest, with marina slips and Venetian Festival weekend booked out months ahead. September trades some of that warmth for thinner crowds and better light for photographing the mushroom houses. The Ironton Ferry and most seasonal docks close mid-November through mid-April.
Working from the lake

Wi-Fi & remote work

Is Wi-Fi reliable enough to work remotely around Lake Charlevoix?
Yes in Boyne City and Charlevoix — Lake Charlevoix Coffee Company and Iron Goat Coffee in East Jordan both handle a multi-hour work session, and cell coverage stays solid around most of the shoreline. Ironton and the more rural stretches of the South Arm run patchier; confirm a rental's actual connection before planning a full workday there.
