Getting there & around

Logistics

What's the closest airport to Lake Champlain's Vermont shore?
Burlington International Airport (BTV) sits about ten minutes from downtown and closer still to Shelburne — the only lake in this region with an airport actually on its shore. For the Champlain Islands, BTV is still the play; count on 30–40 minutes from the airport to South Hero or North Hero once you're off I-89.
How long is the drive from Burlington to the Champlain Islands?
About 30 minutes to South Hero via US-2 across the Sand Bar causeway, another 20 to North Hero, and closer to 45 minutes to Basin Harbor and Vergennes heading south instead. The causeway itself is part of the drive — you're on open water for a stretch of it, not just approaching the lake.
Is parking difficult in downtown Burlington in summer?
Yes, especially near Church Street Marketplace and the waterfront on weekends. The Community Boathouse and Waterfront Park lots fill first; the downtown parking garages off Church Street are the reliable backup and often cheaper than circling for street parking. Free Sunday parking at city-owned lots is the one break in the week.
Is there an international ferry across Lake Champlain?
No — Lake Champlain Ferries' two Vermont-to-New York crossings (Grand Isle to Plattsburgh, and Charlotte to Essex) are domestic; both towns are in the United States. The Islands do sit close to the Canadian border near Alburgh and Rouses Point, but the ferries themselves don't cross into Quebec. No reservations needed for either route.
Groceries, gas, urgent care

Essentials

Where's the closest full grocery store?
City Market/Onion River Co-op has two Burlington locations — downtown on South Winooski Avenue and the South End on Flynn Avenue — both open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. For a Champlain Islands rental, Keeler's Bay Variety in South Hero is the actual grocery stop; there's no full supermarket closer than the mainland.
Where's the closest urgent care to the Champlain Islands?
UVM Medical Center's urgent care at the Fanny Allen Campus in Colchester is the nearest walk-in option, open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily — about 30 minutes from South Hero. Community Health Centers of Burlington has a primary-care office in South Hero for non-urgent visits, but for anything acute, drive to Colchester or the UVM ER in Burlington.
Is there a pharmacy on the Champlain Islands?
Not a retail chain pharmacy — the nearest CVS and Walgreens locations are in Burlington and South Burlington. The Fanny Allen urgent care in Colchester has an outpatient pharmacy on site, which covers most needs on the way back from the Islands. Fill a prescription before heading north for a week if you can.
Where to eat

Food & drink

Where do locals eat in Burlington?
Trattoria Delia on Saint Paul Street on a weeknight. The Zero Gravity Beer Hall's coffee-and-waffle window before 10 a.m., which most visitors never find. Radio Bean for the coffee-by-day, music-by-night crowd. Farmhouse Tap & Grill's bar side over the Church Street tourist rooms on a Friday.
What's the best restaurant with a lake view?
Splash at the Boathouse for the straight shot across the water to the Adirondacks, right at the Community Boathouse. Spot on the Dock for the sunset crowd on the King Street pier. On the Islands, the North Hero House Pier Bar sits over City Bay on three sides — but only Father's Day through Labor Day.
Is there dock-and-dine on the Champlain Islands?
Yes. The North Hero House has a private deep-water dock on City Bay for guests arriving by boat, and Basin Harbor's marina puts you steps from the Red Mill Restaurant. Both are seasonal — May through October at Basin Harbor, Father's Day through Labor Day for North Hero's Pier Bar specifically.
Which Champlain Islands wineries are worth the stop?
Snow Farm Vineyard in South Hero, Vermont's first commercial vineyard, for the ice wine and the deck over the West Shore Road bluff. Shelburne Vineyard on the mainland side isn't technically an Island winery but is close enough to pair with a South Hero afternoon — weekend live music runs there all summer.
What's worth doing

Things to do

What's there to do around Lake Champlain when it rains?
ECHO Leahy Center's aquarium and lake-ecology exhibits cover a few hours in Burlington. Shelburne Museum's indoor galleries and the Ticonderoga steamboat work regardless of weather. The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum near Basin Harbor is free and mostly indoor exhibits — the better rainy-day pick for anyone staying south near Vergennes.
What is the Island Line Rail Trail and the Colchester Causeway?
A 14.4-mile paved path running from Burlington's Waterfront Park north along a marble-and-granite causeway built over open water. A 200-foot gap called the Cut gets bridged by the Local Motion bike ferry, running Friday through Sunday from late May, then daily through peak summer. Rent a bike at the Trailside Center if you didn't bring one.
Should I stay in Burlington or the Champlain Islands?
Burlington for a walkable week — Church Street, the breweries, a coffee shop within blocks of everything, no car required once you're downtown. The Champlain Islands for quiet water, a private dock, and orchards instead of a nightlife strip. Most weeks split the difference: a few nights in Burlington, the rest on South Hero or North Hero with a boat.
On the water & on the trail

Outdoors

Where can you swim on Lake Champlain's Vermont shore?
Oakledge Park's two beaches and Red Rocks Park in the Burlington area; Sand Bar State Park for the warmest, shallowest water anywhere on the lake. On the Islands, Knight Point and Grand Isle State Parks both have guarded or semi-guarded beaches. Alburgh Dunes, further north, has one of the longest stretches of open sand and fewer people using it.
Where can you rent a boat on Lake Champlain?
Vermont Boat Rental and the Community Sailing Center both operate out of Burlington's Community Boathouse. Apple Island Marina covers the Champlain Islands out of South Hero. Basin Harbor's Boat Club rents motorboats and includes kayaks and paddleboards for resort guests near Vergennes. Reserve at least two weeks out for a July or August weekend.
Where's the best sunset spot on Lake Champlain?
The end of the Community Boathouse pier in Burlington faces west across the widest part of the lake toward the Adirondacks — the same view the Spirit of Ethan Allen's evening cruise is built around. On the Islands, Snow Farm Vineyard's deck over South Hero's West Shore Road catches the same light with a glass of Riesling instead of a boat rail.
With the family

Kids

Is Lake Champlain's Vermont shore good for families with kids?
Yes, on both ends. ECHO Leahy Center and Oakledge Park's accessible treehouse work for a Burlington day; Sand Bar State Park's shallow, warm water is the easier swim for younger kids than the open lake. On the Islands, Knight Point's beach and pickleball courts and Allenholm Farm's donkey and maple creemees round out a family afternoon.
With the dog

Pets

How dog-friendly is the Vermont side of Lake Champlain?
Reasonably. Switchback's Beer Garden and Foam Brewers both allow leashed dogs on their patios. Oakledge Park, Red Rocks Park, and the Island Line Trail all permit dogs. The North Hero House's Pier Bar is dog-friendly even though the main dining room isn't. State park beaches generally don't allow dogs in the swimming areas in season.
Seasons & weather

When to come

When's the best time to visit Lake Champlain's Vermont shore?
Late June through early September for full water access, the farmers market, and every seasonal restaurant open at once. Late September into early October trades some warm-water swimming for foliage color along the Islands' orchards and thinner crowds on the Island Line Trail. Winter closes most of the seasonal docks and restaurants entirely.
Is anything at Shelburne Museum closed in 2026?
The Circus Building closes September 28, 2026 for a preservation project and stays shut for the rest of the season, which ends October 25. If seeing it specifically is the point of the trip, visit before late September; the rest of the 39-building campus stays open on the normal schedule.
Working from the lake

Wi-Fi & remote work

Is Wi-Fi reliable enough to work remotely around Lake Champlain?
Yes in Burlington — August First, Vivid Coffee Roasters, and Speeder & Earl's all handle a multi-hour work session, and the Community Boathouse docks even have free Wi-Fi from Burlington Telecom. The Champlain Islands are spottier; cell coverage and home Wi-Fi both get less reliable past South Hero, so confirm a rental's connection before planning a full workday from North Hero.
