Answers, not algorithms.

The questions travelers actually Google before they arrive — and the answers you'd get from a friend who lives on Higgins Lake.

Getting there & around

Logistics

What's the closest airport to Higgins Lake?
MBS International Airport (Saginaw/Freeland), roughly ninety minutes south down I-75. There's no regional airport closer — Higgins Lake is a drive-to destination out of Detroit, Grand Rapids, or Saginaw, not a fly-in one. Rent a car at MBS; there's no shuttle service running specifically to Roscommon.
How far is Roscommon from the Higgins Lake state parks?
About five miles southwest to South Higgins Lake State Park, closer to nine miles west to North Higgins Lake State Park — different drives, not a quick hop between the two. Plan a trip around one park's side of the lake rather than bouncing between both in the same afternoon.
What's the difference between Higgins Lake and Houghton Lake?
Houghton Lake, about ten miles east, is Michigan's largest inland lake — bigger, louder, more bars and motels ringing the shore. Higgins Lake is smaller at 9,600 acres, split between two quieter state parks, and reads as the family lake next door rather than the party one. The two aren't interchangeable; pick based on which reputation you actually want.
Groceries, gas, urgent care

Essentials

Where's the closest full grocery store to Higgins Lake?
Family Fare Supermarket on Fifth Street in downtown Roscommon, open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily — bakery, deli, and a real meat counter, not just a convenience aisle. Evergreen Northern Market on North Higgins Lake Drive covers the basics without the drive into town if you're staying on the lake's north end.
Where's the closest ER or urgent care to Higgins Lake?
Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital's emergency department, about twenty minutes north, is the nearest 24-hour ER. Roscommon Community Health Center on Lake Street handles primary care, but appointment-only — walk-in service was discontinued there, so anything urgent still means the drive to Grayling.
Is there a pharmacy in Roscommon?
Rite Aid on North Fifth Street is the retail option, open daily into the evening. Munson's Roscommon Community Health Center also runs an on-site pharmacy tied to its clinic. Fill anything you'll need for the week before you arrive if the trip is short — neither is a 24-hour counter.
Where to eat

Food & drink

Where can you eat right on Higgins Lake?
Silver Dollar Pub & Grill on the west shore, with a tiki bar patio and live music some summer nights, and Cut River Grille on the east side, seated on the channel that runs toward Houghton Lake. Between the two, that's the actual sit-down dining directly on the water — everything else means a short drive into Roscommon.
Where's the best ice cream near Higgins Lake?
Little Cottage Ice Cream on the west shore will run a cone out to your dock if you call ahead — worth knowing before you assume you have to walk in. Nibbles Ice Cream on the east side covers the same craving for anyone staying on that shore instead. Both are seasonal and cash-friendly.
Is there a brewery near Higgins Lake?
Not directly on the lake — Dead Bear Brewing Co in Grayling, about twenty minutes north on I-75, is the closest, with smoked meats and a rotating tap list. Closed Mondays. It's a deliberate drive rather than a walk from a lake rental, but the area's only real brewery option.
What's worth doing

Things to do

What's there to do around Higgins Lake when it rains?
The Higgins Lake Nursery and CCC Museum inside North Higgins Lake State Park covers an hour indoors, free with a Recreation Passport. Fred's of Roscommon has cosmic bowling and pool if the kids need to burn energy. The AuSable River Center's local-history exhibits round out a full rained-out afternoon.
Should I visit North or South Higgins Lake State Park?
South Higgins has the bigger numbers — a 400-unit campground, second-largest in Michigan's state park system, and a nine-ramp boat launch basin, the busiest access point on the lake. North Higgins is quieter, built around the CCC Museum and eleven miles of hiking and ski trail. Boat and camp south; walk and learn the history north.
Where's the best boat launch on Higgins Lake?
South Higgins Lake State Park's basin, with nine separate concrete ramps, a boat wash, and trailer parking built for volume — the default launch for most boaters on the lake. B & B Sports Center & Marina, near North Higgins, rents tritoons and ski boats directly if you don't own one.
On the water & on the trail

Outdoors

Is Higgins Lake actually as clear as people say?
Close to it. Secchi-disk readings on the lake's East Basin have measured 35 feet — deep enough that a dropped object stays visible most of the way down — placing Higgins among the two or three clearest lakes Michigan's monitoring program tracks. The clarity comes from spring feed and low nutrient runoff, not a marketing claim.
With the family

Kids

Is Higgins Lake good for families with kids?
Yes, more than most Michigan lakes its size. Both state parks run designated swim beaches, the CCC Museum covers a rainy morning, and ice cream stands sit on both shores. Higgins reads quieter and more family-oriented than Houghton Lake next door, which draws more of the bar-and-nightlife crowd.
With the dog

Pets

Is Higgins Lake dog-friendly?
Reasonably. The Bird and The Bear's outdoor tables welcome dogs, and both state parks allow leashed pets on the trails and in most areas of the grounds. Michigan state parks generally don't allow dogs on the designated swim beach itself during the summer season — check signage at the beach entrance before assuming otherwise.
Seasons & weather

When to come

When's the best time to visit Higgins Lake?
Late June through August for full swimming and boat-launch access at both state parks. The farmers market at the AuSable River Center runs mid-May through mid-October if you're coming in a shoulder month. Winter isn't a shutdown season here either — Cross Country Ski Headquarters rents gear for the trail network both parks maintain once the snow holds.
