The list nobody Instagrams. Where to grocery-shop on a Saturday afternoon. Which gas station's open at 11. Where the pharmacy is at six on a Sunday. The closest urgent care if the kid hits the dock the wrong way.
We list the boring stuff so the vacation works.
Roscommon's full supermarket, on Fifth Street two blocks from downtown — bakery, deli, produce, and a meat counter, open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the week. The default provisioning stop for anyone renting on either side of the lake; nothing closer counts as a real grocery store.
A specialty grocery and gift shop on Lake Street, smaller and more curated than Family Fare — the stop for a good bottle of olive oil or a gift for the host rather than a full week's shopping list. Pairs well with a stop at Bob's Butcher Shop two doors down for the actual dinner.
Roscommon's hardware and building-materials store on South Fifth Street — the stop for a replacement dock board, a part for a broken sprinkler, or anything else a lake house throws at a renter mid-week. Open regular business hours, closed Sunday like most of downtown Roscommon.
The largest beer and wine selection in town, on North Fifth Street alongside specialty food and gifts. Worth a stop before a dinner at the rental rather than settling for whatever the convenience store carries. Small enough that the staff will make an actual recommendation if asked.
A convenience store on North Higgins Lake Drive that runs a Dairy Queen counter in season alongside pizza and subs — the closer stop than driving into Roscommon proper for anyone staying on the north end of the lake. Open daily; the soft-serve line still moves fast on a packed Saturday.
A full-service meat counter on Lake Street — actual butchering, not a supermarket case, plus a deli and produce section. The better call for anyone grilling all week instead of eating out every night. Ask what came in that morning rather than pointing at what's already wrapped.
A sporting-goods shop on North Cut Road covering the gear a week at the lake tends to reveal you forgot — tackle, life jackets, the right-size paddle. The practical stop before a rental boat trip rather than after realizing what's missing once you're already on the water.
A ski shop on North Cut Road that only makes sense once the lake freezes — cross-country rentals and gear for the trail network both state parks maintain through winter. Higgins Lake's other season, and proof the area doesn't close down once the boats come out of the water.
A clothing and souvenir shop on the west shore's Higgins Lake Drive, the closer stop than driving into Roscommon for a forgotten swimsuit cover-up or an actual gift instead of a gas-station T-shirt. Small storefront, worth a walk-through between a Silver Dollar lunch and an afternoon back on the water.
The nearest full emergency department to Higgins Lake, about twenty minutes north in Grayling — a 24-hour ER for anything beyond what a Roscommon clinic can handle. Save the address before a trip rather than searching for it mid-emergency; cell coverage on the back roads near the lake isn't always reliable.
A Munson Healthcare clinic on Lake Street in downtown Roscommon — family care, labs, X-ray, and an on-site pharmacy, but appointment-only. Walk-in care is no longer offered here, so anything urgent still goes to the Grayling ER instead. Monday through Friday, 8 to 5, for anything that can wait for a scheduled visit.
Roscommon's retail pharmacy on North Fifth Street, open daily into the evening — the practical stop for a prescription refill or basic first-aid supplies without driving to Grayling. Hours shift like most small-town pharmacy counters; call ahead if the trip depends on it being open.
