What happened to the Donner Party at Donner Lake?
In the winter of 1846-47, 87 pioneers headed for California were trapped near the lake by an early, relentless snowstorm. Without adequate shelter or supplies, some resorted to cannibalism to survive; 41 of the 89 in the full party died. Donner Memorial State Park preserves the camp site as a National Historic Landmark.
