Chautauqua Lake · An honest list

Wineries worth the drive.

We don't list every winery — we list the ones that are doing something the wine itself can vouch for. The pours where the producer is in the tasting room. The hillsides where the view does half the work. The pet-nat experiments and the serious Rieslings.

  • Westfield
    Johnson Estate Winery

New York's oldest estate winery, running since 1961 on 110 acres outside Westfield — about 20 minutes from Mayville on the Lake Erie Wine Trail, not the Chautauqua Lake shoreline itself. Thirteen grape varieties, an unpretentious tasting room, and a set of ice wines the shop leans on for gifts. Worth the drive on a day you're not trying to stay near the water.
