A half-hour detour, not a full afternoon.

Nature center inside Wellesley Island State Park, about forty-five minutes from Black Lake toward Alexandria Bay — miles of hiking trails through wooded wetland and granite outcrop, three miles of St. Lawrence shoreline, and live-animal displays. Worth combining with a Thousand Islands day trip rather than driving out for on its own. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing keep the trails open in winter.

State-operated concrete ramp two miles west of Edwardsville, with parking for 55 cars and trailers — the only real public access point on a lake where almost the entire shoreline is privately owned. A small outdoor bathroom and a couple of benches round it out; no beach, no swimming area, just the launch and a fishing pier. This is where the tournament boats stage on a Saturday morning.

A 5,000-square-foot marina and sporting goods shop on County Route 6 between Hammond and Edwardsville, open seven days a week, year-round — unusual for a business this far into the off-season quiet. Pontoon sales and rentals, tackle, and the boat-storage arrangement most cottage owners use over winter. If Black Lake had a hardware store for boats, this is it.

One of the older operations on the lake, and the one anglers mention first when asked where to get minnows before 6 a.m. on a Saturday.

Marina at the mouth of the Oswegatchie River in Ogdensburg, about 25 minutes from Black Lake — gas dock, bait shop, kayak rentals, and a full-service restaurant with a coffee-and-ice-cream counter on the side. One of the only privately owned marinas in the area and the only one with on-water fuel service, which matters if you're running a boat down from the lake rather than trailering it.

Small museum in a 1910 building that once housed the factory for Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills — now running exhibits on St. Lawrence River fishing history, sturgeon and muskellunge included, with gear once owned by local anglers Allan Bogardus and James Evans. One of the only places in the region that treats Black Lake's fishing culture as history worth documenting rather than just a tourism pitch.

The world's largest collection of Frederic Remington's paintings, sketches, and sculpture, housed in the 1810 Parish Mansion in Ogdensburg — a serious art stop about 25 minutes from the lake, open weekdays only. A separate children's wing runs western-themed activities, which makes it a workable rainy-day plan for a family that's exhausted the fishing-and-cards routine at the cottage.

Alexandria Bay and Boldt Castle sit about 45 minutes from Black Lake — a full day trip, not an afternoon detour, but the region's actual headline attraction if guests want something beyond fishing. Uncle Sam Boat Tours runs the shuttle out to Heart Island; the castle itself is the unfinished monument George Boldt started building for his wife in 1900 and abandoned when she died four years later.
