The list nobody Instagrams. Where to grocery-shop on a Saturday afternoon. Which gas station's open at 11. Where the pharmacy is at six on a Sunday. The closest urgent care if the kid hits the dock the wrong way.
We list the boring stuff so the vacation works.
A Trimble-family grocery on Rapid City Road since 1974 — a real butcher counter, a deli that turns out ribs every other Friday through summer and fall, and a gas station attached to the lot. For anyone provisioning near the south end of the lake, this is the stop before Butch's or the sandbar, not a convenience-store substitute.
The sister store to the Rapid City location, on Ames Street in downtown Elk Rapids — the same deli and soup-and-salad bar, run by the same family for more than fifty years. Village Market & Gas operates next door with a car wash attached, and the rewards program converts points into a discount on the next grocery run.
Alden's self-described one-stop party shop on Helena Road — beer and wine, general-store basics, and an ice cream counter that closed for a stretch and came back to enough relief that regulars still mention it. It sits right next to where the Saturday farmers market sets up, so the two visits pair without much extra driving.
A True Value hardware and lumber yard on South Bridge Street, family-run since 1987 — tools, paint, plumbing and electrical parts, lawn and garden supplies. The stop for the dock repair or the rental-house fix that can't wait for a run to the Traverse City box stores forty minutes south.
A mom-and-pop beer, wine, liquor, and cigar shop just off Bridge Street on Division Street. Hours run late most weeknights — past 8 on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday — which covers a dinner-run bottle of wine better than the pharmacy counter across town. Closed early on Wednesdays; plan around it.
A second beer-and-wine option a block from The Lunch Box on Cayuga Street, on the east side of downtown Bellaire. The practical backup when Spirits on M88's hours don't line up with a Sunday-night need, or when the line at the Bridge Street shop runs long on a holiday weekend. Nothing fancy about the stop, just a second door.
The gas stop on South Main Street in Central Lake — the reliable fill-up on the lake's north end, where stations thin out compared to the cluster of options in downtown Bellaire. Worth topping off here before heading toward Alden or Eastport, since the next stretch of M-88 and US-31 runs a while between pumps.
A Level 2 ChargePoint station on the Shanty Creek Resorts grounds — two J1772 ports, available around the clock, two dollars an hour for the charge with the first eight hours of parking free. It's effectively the only public EV charging near Torch Lake itself, so anyone driving electric should plan a fill here rather than assume a second option exists closer to the water.
A primary-care office on South M-88, part of the East Jordan Family Health Center network — family physicians, gynecology, mammograms, and immunizations by appointment rather than walk-in urgent care. For anything acute, the drive to Kalkaska Memorial's emergency department is still the right call; this is the stop for the sinus infection that can wait a day, not the one that can't.
Munson Healthcare's eight-bed acute-care hospital in Kalkaska, with a physician-staffed emergency department open 24 hours — the nearest real ER to Torch Lake's south end, roughly thirty minutes from Rapid City or Bellaire. Outpatient surgery, cardiac and pulmonary rehab, and dialysis all run out of the same building. Save the address before a trip rather than searching for it mid-emergency.
A locally owned pharmacy on North Bridge Street since 1992 — prescription dispensing, medication therapy management, immunizations, and basic health screenings for anyone staying in town rather than driving to a chain in Traverse City. Open weekdays 9 to 5 and Saturday 9 to 2, closed Sunday, so filling anything for a weekend arrival needs to happen before Friday close.
