Mullett Lake · The kid list

Where to take the kids.

The places that don't make you apologize for the kids. Restaurants with crayons that aren't an afterthought, parks with shade and bathrooms, the ice-cream stop with the line on a hot Tuesday.

Restaurants

2 stops
  • Cheboygan
    Great Lakes Grill

A family dining room built around fresh-cut steaks and whatever came off a local boat that morning, walleye and whitefish included. The kitchen makes its own soups and bread rather than buying them in, and a full bar alongside the kids' menu keeps the room split evenly between a date and a family dinner. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 4 to 8 — early enough that a late arrival means a locked door.

    Tue–Sat 4pm–8pm$$$(231) 627-8161
  • Cheboygan
    Duncan City Pizza Co

Hand-spun dough, hand-shredded cheese, and sub bread baked in-house rather than trucked in. The pizza is the draw, but the baked submarine sandwiches built on Michigan meats hold their own. Dine in, carry out, or have it delivered back to a Mullett Lake rental. Open daily, with Friday and Saturday hours running to 10 for anyone coming off the water later than planned.

Coffee & breakfast

1 stop
  • Topinabee
    Cafe Noka
    Editor's pick

A log-cabin diner that's run breakfast and lunch since 1994, with a patio looking straight at Mullett Lake. The three-egg omelets come in every combination a menu can hold, and the Noka Crepe is the one regulars order twice in a week. Open daily, 7 to 2, no dinner service and no reservations. Get there before nine on a Saturday or expect the wait that comes with it.

Parks & trails

1 stop
  • Cheboygan (Aloha)
    Aloha State Park
    Editor's pick

The state park on Mullett Lake's northeast shore, with 285 campsites, two beaches, and a boat basin cut into a protected harbor rather than open water. Waterfront sites book up to six months out for a summer weekend. The pier doubles as the sunset spot once the day-trippers clear the beach. Full hookups run the south loop, for anyone pulling something bigger than a tent.

Farmers markets

1 stop
  • Cheboygan
    Cheboygan Farmers Market
    Editor's pick

Festival Square, downtown Cheboygan — Wednesdays and Saturdays, 8 to 1, May through October, with live entertainment at the Saturday market from 11 to 1. Golden River Orchard sells here before its own farm stand opens for the season. The Wednesday market runs thinner than Saturday's — go Saturday if the point is the full spread, not just produce.

    Wed & Sat 8am–1pm, May–October

  • Cheboygan
    Nautical North Family Adventures
    Editor's pick

The outfit running the water end of a Cheboygan visit, from a glass-bottom shipwreck tour to the Landlubbers Lock Tour through the Cheboygan Lock, where the Inland Waterway drops into Lake Huron. The Mullett Lake Fireworks Cruise runs July 4th; the full Inland Waterway Expedition covers all 38 miles in a single 12-hour day for $200 a person. Everything departs from their own dock downtown.

  • Cheboygan
The History Center of Cheboygan County

Three buildings holding close to 9,000 artifacts: the Spies Heritage Hall's general collection, a Victorian-era sheriff's house and jail, and a log cabin built to show how Northern Michigan's Native communities lived in the late 1800s. Open Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 4, last tour at 3. A slower stop than the marina, and a way to place Topinabee's own Chief Topinabee namesake in context.
