The list nobody Instagrams. Where to grocery-shop on a Saturday afternoon. Which gas station's open at 11. Where the pharmacy is at six on a Sunday. The closest urgent care if the kid hits the dock the wrong way.
We list the boring stuff so the vacation works.
The market across the road from Topinabee's public lake access, running gas pumps, a deli, a beer cave, and Michigan's full liquor selection under one roof since long before anyone called this a resort town. Pizza's made to order. It's the provisioning stop for anyone renting on this end of Mullett Lake — nothing else in Topinabee fills that role. Open early and late most days.
The full grocery run for a week on the lake: bakery, deli, produce, meat counter, and an in-store pharmacy open Monday through Friday, 9 to 7, and Saturday until 3. Open daily, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The better stock-up than anything in Topinabee if a rental is cooking for a crowd rather than grilling burgers off Breakers' menu.
The convenience and liquor stop for the hamlet at the lake's north end, near the country club and well past where Topinabee's businesses thin out. Not a full grocery, but the right call for ice, a case of beer, or something forgotten on the drive up from Topinabee rather than the twenty-minute run into Cheboygan proper.
A convenience and liquor store in the small lakeside community that shares its name with the state park next door. The closest re-up for campers at Aloha State Park who don't want to break down a site for a beer run. It's a seasonal-community store rather than a year-round operation — call ahead before counting on it in the shoulder season.
The hardware run for whatever a week on Mullett Lake didn't pack: a part for the dock, a fuse for the boat, a replacement for whatever broke on day two. Standard Ace inventory and reliability, close enough to Family Fare and the Opera House to fold into one downtown Cheboygan errand trip rather than a special drive.
A second hardware option along the corridor between Topinabee and Cheboygan, closer to the lake than the Main Street Ace and easier to reach without driving all the way into town. Building supplies as much as hardware, which makes it the better call for a rental-property fix rather than a single missing bolt.
A convenience and party store on the same stretch as Cheboygan's car dealerships and auto shops, north of Topinabee and short of downtown. The practical stop for ice, a case of beer, and lottery tickets without committing to the full Family Fare run further into town. Worth knowing about on the drive in, before a rental's fridge is empty for the weekend.
Kilwin's fudge and chocolate under one roof with a Hallmark card shop, the kind of combination small Northern Michigan towns still support. A stop for a gift on the way out of town, or a box of fudge that doesn't survive the drive back to a Mullett Lake rental. Downtown on Main Street, easy to fold into an Opera House or History Center afternoon.
The region's hospital, with a 24-hour emergency department serving all of Mullett Lake, not just Cheboygan proper. About fifteen minutes from Topinabee, closer still from Aloha State Park's own shore. Save the address before a trip rather than searching for it mid-emergency — the drive from the north end of the lake runs longer than it looks on a map.
An independent pharmacy downtown, the alternative to Family Fare's in-store counter and the closer option if a prescription needs filling on the way through Cheboygan rather than after the grocery run. Call ahead to confirm a fill is ready — a small-town pharmacy doesn't always run the same hours as the chains further south.
